Sports Premium

Background

In April 2013, the government announced new funding of £150 million for physical education and sport, to be used to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision. Funding has been allocated to all maintained and state-funded schools with primary phase pupils from 1st September 2013.

Schools are free to determine how best to use this funding to improve the quality and breadth of PE and Sport provision, including increasing participation in PE and sport so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach performance levels they are capable of.

Accountability

Schools must report on how they spent their Sports Premium each academic year. In July 2025 a new digital reporting platform was launched to help with this. You can see how we spent our allocation for 2024/25 by clicking on the links below, which show our submissions to the digital reporting platform:

Promoting Physical Activity at St John’s

In addition to the PE & Sport premium funding, below is a summary of other ways in which we engage children in physical activity each year:

Sports ActivityCostChildren InvolvedDescription
Intra-school competitionsfree KS2These are mini-competitions between teams of St John’s children. These take place each half term in curriculum sports such as: hockey, basketball, football, dodgeball, cricket, tag rugby and rounders
Additional Club Coachingfree KS2Specialist Karate coaches deliver taster sessions to children in KS each spring term
Signposting to Local ClubsfreeAll childrenWe are always keen to promote local sports clubs in order to encourage more children to become physically active. Leaflets from local clubs are regularly distributed from school and taster sessions in cricket, gymnastics and dance have been offered.
Physical Activity ChartsfreeAll childrenOn the playground there are three large charts which set the children physical, aerobic challenges. They set themselves goals and enjoy trying to beat their own PBs!
Active LunchtimesfreeAll childrenWe select ’Lunchtime Leaders’ from Class 4 to run lunchtime sports (e.g. target throwing, skipping etc.) for all children who want to take part each day. This has led to increased participation in physical activity across the school each day.
Sports DayfreeAll children Every June we hold our traditional sports day. We feel it is important to retain a competitive element to sport and so all children compete in races, as well as some potted sports.
